The Office of University Branding provides brand reviews of all branded materials produced by George Mason colleagues across the university and approves all third-party, licensed use of university marks for commercial products. In the announcement of the new logo in April 2024, President Gregory Washington stated that compliance with the standards is mandatory, and review for compliance is assigned to the Office of University Branding.
What is Admin 1111?
Formalized in George Mason University Policy Number 1111, one of the core functions of the Office of University Branding is to confirm that all university marketing materials, websites, and advertising follow George Mason's visual and editorial style guidelines. This policy helps ensure consistency across materials and that all units are distributing materials that support George Mason's brand.
Why does compliance with University brand standards matter?
Universal branding best practices have long established that a strong brand is only possible when its elements are used consistently. Every variation in brand appearance creates confusion and contradiction in the minds of those viewing it, especially with a new brand look. The stronger, more consistent, and more compelling a visual brand is, the more attraction it creates among those whom we wish to study at, work at, give to, or support the university.
What projects should I submit for review?
We ask that our colleagues proactively share their projects with the Office of University Branding for review prior to release. Submit a request for Admin 1111 review for:
- Publications—Newsletters, annual reports, magazines, and other short- and long-format pieces
- Advertising—Print ads, billboards, posters, social media ads, commercials, and other media
- Websites—New websites and marketing landing pages
- Marketing—Program flyers, brochures, postcards, emails, and other recruitment or promotional materials
How do I submit my project for review?
To request a review of your product, submit your request to the OUB Common Form. Please allow a minimum of three business days for us to review and provide feedback for graphics, posters, and ads. Allow at least five business days for review of publications and multi-part or page projects.
What if my materials do not meet George Mason brand standards?
It happens, and it’s okay—our staff will work with you to bring your materials into brand compliance. Ultimately, however, brand compliance is required.
Where can I find more information on Admin 1111?
