The Trademark Licensing program promotes and protects the use of George Mason University trademarks, including:
- Ensure proper use of the trademarks associated with George Mason University.
- Strengthen trademark recognition and use through relationships with retailers, licensees, campus departments, students, organizations, alumni, and fans.
- Generate revenue that funds scholarships and programs.
What is a Trademark
Trademarks are primary visual representations for George Mason University and valuable assets in all aspects of operations and services. Properties such as names, designs, logos, and/or derivatives are owned by George Mason University. The unauthorized use of such material is illegal and thereby punishable by law.
George Mason departments, colleges, organizations, and other internal units may not assign rights or otherwise grant permission to any other entity to use George Mason’s trademarks without prior review and approval by Office of University Branding and/or University Counsel.
To streamline the usage of George Mason trademarks, George Mason partners with CLC to manage and market its trademarks.
George Mason University's trademarks/logos are available through JPatton on Demand. JPatton is a full-service logo distribution and management program designed to ensure the most accurate and efficient methods for users to access trademarks/logos. Approved George Mason licensees may secure access to the JPatton portal.
Look for the Label
As the brand of George Mason University continues to grow, so does the threat of unlicensed merchandise. When purchasing George Mason-branded products, choose trusted businesses and look for the CLC Hologram Label on the packaging or tag on all licensed products sold at retail.
Why does purchasing officially licensed merchandise matter?
- Licensed vendors are required to follow the George Mason University Code of Conduct. This means that all George Mason products are expected to be produced under fair and safe working conditions.
- Royalties from the sale of officially licensed products support the University and scholarships.
- Licensed products have been reviewed and approved with messages deemed appropriate to associate with George Mason University.
- It is illegal to use the George Mason University trademarks/names without permission.
